28th Annual meeting of the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections

June 10, 2013

JOIN US for the 2013 meeting of the Society for the Preservation of Natural History Collections! This meeting is being held June 17-22 on the campus of the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in Rapid City, South Dakota, home of the Museum of Geology. We welcome this meeting and look forward to a fun, informative and productive week.

Our theme this year is "Repositories and Partnerships in Managing Natural History Collections in the 21st Century." We will focus on the issues surrounding ownership, stewardship, and stakeholders in collections care throughout the meeting.

South Dakota School of Mines and Technology is the region’s center of excellence in science and engineering. SDSMT is the home of the Museum of Geology, founded in 1885.

The Museum recently opened the Paleontology Research Laboratory, a LEED Gold structure dedicated to collections care and conservation for natural history collections, including significant repository collections from the National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, U. S. Forest Service, U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pine Ridge Reservation, Rosebud Reservation, and other agencies.

Our host hotel is the Best Western Ramkota, with special room rates for conference attendees.

Our setting is Rapid City, at the intersection of the Northern Plains and the Black Hills.
